Random Variables and their types

What are Random Variables? A random variable is a numerical description of the outcome of a statistical experiment. They are the ways to map outcomes of random processes to numbers. For example:-

X= Sum of the upward face after rolling dice

P= (Sum of the upward face after rolling dice is ≤30) can be represented as P(Y≤30) and is a random variable.

Types of Random Variables There are broadly two types of Random Variables:-

  1. Discrete Random Variables - They have distinct or separate values. For ex. Y= Year that a Random student was born

  2. Continous Random Variables - They have any value in the interval. For ex. Y= Exact winning time for the men in 100m dash in 2016 Olympics.
